East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Harry Smith was the son of mathematics professor O.D. Smith of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, later Auburn University. He graduated with a B.S. degree from Auburn in 1895.
